This charming township is situated on the western slopes of the Sant’Eleuterio hills, 11 kilometres from Gallipoli. Its largely agricultural economy is based on the production of olive oil, wine and fruit and vegetables. Its origins have been lost amongst the obscurities of ancient sources. The first references to the small town surface in the 13th century AD.
The small town of Parabita, characterised from the beginning by a predominantly agricultural economy, developed along the slopes of a hill, was strengthened and protected by a large castle and saw in the course of centuries a succession of feudal regimes. Amongst the many recorded feudal lords are the Del Balzo Orsini, the Castriota and the Ferrari. The most noteworthy monuments are the Castello (castle), the Chiesa Matrice church and the Palazzo Ducale.
