Situated astride the Salentine mountain range, this town still maintains today a predominantly agricultural economy. Until 1908, Sannicola was a country ward of the town of Gallipoli. Consequently, until this time, the little town and its territory had always followed the fortunes of the Ionic centre.
The heart of Sannicola consists of the Piazza della Repubblica, its main square where the Palazzo Comunale town hall was built in 1922. Close to the Piazza della Repubblica is a flight of marble steps (1964) and a war memorial leading to the church of Santa Maria della Grazie, once dedicated to San Nicola. The oldest church in the town is that dedicated to the Saints Medici, finished in 1886. There are numerous ancient farms and country manor houses offering refreshment, entertainment and good cuisine.
