This island, narrow and jagged, has always had a notable variety of inhabitants. There are at least 80 varieties of terrestrial vertebrates which reproduce here. The closure of the penitentiary and the subsequent institution of a park, now permits the control and programmed entrance of visitors. The flora is almost entirely made up of Mediterranean species such as mastic, spurge, Phoenician junipers, and rock rose. Fauna covers such animals as Audouin's gull, the common shag, manx and Cory's shearwater, the Sardinian partridge, hares, weasels, the mouflon and a notable population of grey and white donkeys.
