Between Dorgali and Siniscola, close to the sea, you can find Orosei, the
largest town in southern Baronia. Positioned between the slopes of mount
Tuttavista and the lower flow of the river Cedrino, it is surrounded by a
fertile, intensely cultivated plain. The old town centre preserves buildings and
towers which certify to its past importance. Nowadays, its nearby coastline to
the north and south of the Marina di Orosei, is principally concerned with
tourism. The seaside area between Orosei and Dorgali is dominated by large
calcareous rock formations which back onto the coast.
The nature of the rock has
led, over thousands of years, to the formation of the huge grotta del Bue Marino
(cave of the Sea Ox) and of other large caves which also open out onto the sea.
The expanse of enormous calcareous rocks, known as the Supramonte of Dorgali and
of Baunei, continues to push its way down to the coast for many more kilometres.
The road keeps its distance, and the little hidden beaches can practically only
be reached by boat. In this stretch, the caves which open out onto the sea are
more rare.
At Orosei, there are many opportunities accommodating tourists.
