This small town which is situated on the summit of a rocky promontory in a
fortified position overlooking the port, was founded by the Doria family of
Genoa in the XII Century; dating back to this period, the visitor can still see
the castle and most of the fortifications.
From the second half of the 15th Century it became a possession of the crown
of Aragon and today is a thriving farming and fishing centre, an it is a so very
important from a tourist point of view. In the interior of the castle, we find
the weaving Museum which has an important collection of basketwork items made
from palm fronds.
The visitor will find the Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate in the old town of
Castelsardo. This church was built in the XVI Century, over an original
Romanesque construction and in its interior, which has a single nave, we find
an important example of wooden furnishings dating from the 17th and 18th
Centuries and part of an altar piece which dates from the end of the 15th or
the beginning of the 16th Century.
