The Nature Reserve Wood of Malabotta was set up and entrusted to the Sicilian Region State Forestry Body in 1997. It is located in the area between Monti Peloritani and Monti Nebrodi, and includes the communes of Francavilla di Sicilia, Malvagna, Mojo Alcantara, Montalbano Elicona, Roccella Valdemone and Tripi. The actual Reserve has a total area of 15,27 sq Km, the Pre-Reserve 17,66 sq Km, giving a total surface area of sq km 32,93.
About the geomorphology, in the centre-north sector of the Nature Reserve, there are mainly argillaceous-arenaceous deposits, with regular, rolling outlines. On the other hand, in the southern sector the presence of conglomerates and limestone has led to the formation of various crags. Heights go from 650-700 meters from the extreme southern boundary of the Reserve, up to 1.341 meters, Croce Mancina, along the watershed which runs in a North-South direction.
