The Nebrodi Mountains, the Madonie to the west and the Peloritani to the east, form the Appennino siculo (Sicilian Appennino). To the north these directly face the Tyrrhenian Sea, while their southern side is marked by the Etna, and in particular by the rivers Alcantara and Simeto. The main elements that characterize most the Nebrodi natural landscape are the asymmetry of each side, the different modelling of the mountain chains, the very rich vegetation and the humid environments.
The Arabians defined the Nebrodi as "an island in the island" and the reason for this will become clear to the visitor who discovers this surprising land for the first time: rich, suggestive woods, large, green high altitude pastures, silent lakes and flowing streams contrast with the more common image of a dry and sunburnt Sicily. Once kingdom of deers, (as well as fallow-deers, bears and roe deers), the Nebrodi (whose meaning comes from the greek nebros which means precisely, deer) still form the Sicilian richer part in fauna, despite the progressive environmental impoverishment. The last wolfs were killed at the end of the Twenties and the griffins, which flew above the"Rocche del Crasto", have disappeared at the beginning of the Sixties, because of the poisoned bites that were strewed all over the territory to kill the foxes.
