Messina, the "porta della Sicilia" immediately gives an idea of the characteristics of the island, for many centuries it has been an extremely important junction due to its particular position.
The cathedral is both evocative and enchanting, next to which there is a bell- tower surmouunted with a wonderful astronomical clock which is called "the great living clock" by the inhabitants of Messina. The time piece indicates the hours and, like a carousel, statues representing astronomical, historical or religious figures move around.
Every quarter of an hour a few golden statues start to twirlaround. Every half an hour the cockerel flaps its wings and sings, the dove flies, the lion roars and leggendary characters parade before the Madonna. Finally, the statues of Dina and Clerenze, the local heroines of the Sicilian Vespers, strike the hours.
