In 1938, on the initiative of a local scholar, the name of the town was changed from Biscari in Acate to just Acate. The residential area developed around the Piazza della LibertÓ, the centre of the town where the most important buildings are located: the Castle and the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church); the latter was rebuilt a number of times following earthquakes in 1693 and 1846. Things to see: the Church of S. Vincenzo Martire which, inside, holds the relics of the saint in a crystal urn, the Church of the Madonna del Carmelo and the Convento dei Cappuccini (Capuchin Monastery).
About 13 Km away from Acate, there is the seaside village of Macconi, at this point now called Marina di Acate, which is distinguished by the sandy dunes along the coast which extends from Scoglitti to the mouth of the river Dirillo.
