Bibbona - It was a middle age castle on the hills of the countryside of Livorno,
property of Santa Maria Abbey in Vico Masio and later of Lucca Cathedral. In the
XII century, the counts Della Gherardesca became owner of the castle, which was
fortified. When it came under the jurisdiction of the town of Pisa, the counts
got the vicarship. Bibbona keeps its original old shape: it consists of a
sequence of circles, joined by narrow lanes and stairways. Nature lovers,
besides artistic and historical works, can visit the national park Macchia della
Magona’: a green sea stretched for more than 1600 hectares. Pieve di San Ilario,
which was built in the XI century, is an important parish church in the old
town, full of narrow lanes and little squares.
Comune Vecchio has its seat in a great middle age building, which hosts the rich
historical records of the town. The Renaissance church Santa Maria della Pietà,
which was built at the end of 400, makes the village entrance wonderful. Many
traditional and folkloric events, like the historical procession and the Palio
delle Botti, take place in this enchanting village every year. Bibbona is
situated along the wine street, an important area for the production of precious
table wine, like Sassicaia and Ornellaia of Bolgheri. The wine street, immersed
in the Tuscan countryside, gives also the possibility to enjoy the typical
products of the region, like extra virgin olive oil, cheese, fruit and
vegetables.
