Bolgheri is situated at the centre of the Etruscan Coast, not far from Bibbona; it is surrounded by the green vegetation of the woodlands and by cultivated flatlands. The surrounding landscape is simply charming, with its cultivated fields and the typical colours of the Tuscan countryside. Bolgheri is to be found on a small promontory situated at the end of the long Viale dei Cipressi (Avenue of Cypresses), the same that was immortalised by the famous poem "Davanti a San Guido" by Giosuè Carducci who lived here from1938 to 1948.
At the end of the Avenue, one enters the town by passing through an arched gateway which already gives an idea of the atmosphere to be breathed once inside. Straight ahead, there is the castle, with its red bricks which creates a contrast of colours with the green of the olive and cypress trees which surround it. Everything here has maintained its original aspect, giving the feeling that time has stood still, in fact, the historical centre seems to have preserved its original ancient urban layout.
The small restaurants where it is possible to try some of the excellent local products are intriguing: there is the bread baked in a wood burning oven, the mushrooms and the fruits of the Mediterranean scrub maquis, the truffles, the genuine honey, the Doc extra virgin olive oil, the still handmade salamis and the fruit jams presented as they were in the olden days. Do not miss, either, the excellent wines such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia which can be purchased in the characteristic wine shops of the town.
