Collesalvetti and its surrounding hamlets have ancient Etruscan-Roman origin, albeit recent excavations have discovered traces of human presence in pre- historic times. Collesalvetti was originally known in Roman times simply as Colle. The addition of Salvetti dates around 12th century, and was most probably the name of the land estate owner of the main part of the area's territory.
Originally the town of Collesalvetti was made up of a castle situated on the top of a hill. During the 13th century the area was transformed into feudal land, fortifications were built and the area found itself subjected to Pisa and later to Florence. The Medici's however saw great promise in its territories and began to reclaim its marshlands.
