Wine Roads - The route runs parallel to the Tyrrhenian coastline winding its way down from the hills surrounding the valley of the River Cecina to the Piombino headland, and after a brief sea crossing continues around the island of Elba. We're in the part of Tuscany that witnessed the beginning of the Italian wine revolution thanks to the insight of the Marchese Maria Incisa della Rocchetta. In 1944 he planted the first vineyard of Cabernet in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri for what was soon to become the forerunner of Super Tuscans: Sassicaia.
Walking through the vineyards you immediately become aware of how enterprising and hard-working the vine growers have been, ensuring that in the following years the Sassicaia phenomenon did not remain an isolated incident and enriching the Italian enological scene with other great wines. Besides those already mentioned, estates such as Antinori, Satta and Campolmi have embarked upon a process that is still far from over, and are continually being joined by other prestigious producers. All this is happening not only in Bolgheri, but also in the neighbouring areas of D.O.C. Montescudaio and Val di Cornia.
Here the scene changes, and you can sense some slight stylistic differences in wine making, due to the stronger presence of Sangiovese, and the soil and climatic conditions just different enough from Bolgheri to make the enological scene in this corner of Tuscany just that little bit more complex and varied.
