Minerals - All of Elba and not only the "Iron Lands" is a "magnificent open-air mineralogical museum". On Mount Capanne, digging for iron has never been done, but for the last 150 years at least, scholars and collectors the world over have concentrated their interest on this mountain: from its depths come splendid tourmaline and beryl crystals worth collecting. It is no wonder then that Elba is known throughout the world for the beauty of, the rarity of and the scientific interest of its minerals. After centuries of intense exploitation, the Elban mines are no longer frequented by miners, but by collectors and mineral researchers. In truth, even the old "quarrymen" knew of the "scherzi del ferro" (tricks fo the iron). They gave this name to th ecrystals with the most extravagant shapes and unusual colors.
