In 1856, it was turned into a penal colony, and only a few years ago was opened up when the prison buildings were closed down. Pianosa, thus, has gathered together a mixed community of monks and laymen which has given it a new lease of life, converting it to organic farming and ecotourism. Today, the town of Pianosa is deserted, dominated by an unworldly silence. The streets, alleyways and the moorish style cottages and houses are enveloped in a dreamlike atmosphere. Only in the operational part of the island can one find a few custodians guarding the closed-up prisons. Beautiful Pianosa is still not able to accommodate seaside parasols or boats, but it is possible to make pre-arranged day visits. “Porto Romano”, an ancient dock, is the broadest inlet on the island. The seabed here is incredibly beautiful, and the precious expanses of ‘Posidonia’ seaweed make it an unspoilt natural reserve. At present, diving is forbidden, but it is possible only at Cala Giovanna to gaze at the seabed using masks and snorkels.

In the Island of Elba and Archipelago, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
