The general term Maremma is today used to indicate the territory of the province
of Grosseto: a plain under sea-level more and more undulating as we go to the
inland, giving place to a hilly region, then pre-mountain and at last mountain
one. The Maremma landscape is varied: hilly regions intensely cultivated with
the ancient farm-houses, the so-called "maremma farms", generally placed in
dominant and windy regions, bleak of trees.Hills gently degrading towards the sea, whose main colours are intense green in spring and golden yellow in summer, with the presence of olive-groves and vineyards and also woods of cork-oaks and flowering ash full of mushrooms if it rains in summer. The fertile plain too is accurately cultivated and studded with the white rural houses. Many pine forests grow along the coast, wide shores of very fine siliceous sand with its characteristic sand dunes rich in Mediterranean "macchia", the brush.
At Grosseto and the Maremma, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
