The municipality of Pelago extends from the Appennines to Pratomagno, in a mountainous area, at about 20 kms from Florence. Rising around the castle of the Counts Guidi, the town covers a total area of 54 sqm, and currently has a population of 7,200. The beauty of the woods and scenery make the territory of Pelago both a ideal destination for summer holidays and for walking tours.
The most ancient documentation of Pelago dates back to 1089. Its territory was possessed for many years by the Guidi Counts of Poppi, who handed down many endowments to the Monks of Vallombrosa. On the contrary, the castle, at least from the 13th century, was under the authority of the Cattani from Diacceto.
The historical centre of Pelago is built on a Medieval village characterized by a large square slanting downhill, paved in stone and surrounded by groups of houses, most of which have loggias.
To see: Piazza Ghiberti, in antiquity the marketplace. On one side of the square, we find the strikingly-beautiful Palazzo Stupan, with its decorative window frames and copious wrought-iron features.
Piazza Cavalcanti, the oldest part of the town, plays host to the Chiesa di S. Clemente, which retains its enchanting baptismal font, located in quiet corner of the church and made of pietra serena.
The miraculous Crucifix in the Oratory of the Compagnia and the fountain of the "compagni di viaggio" (travelling companions).
The Church of S. Margherita a Tosina, which retains a magnificent organ from the early 20th-Century, a Virgin and Child with St. Anthony from the 18th-Century and a triptych by Giotto.
Villa Altomena, situated between the Sieve and Arno valleys. This villa has been restored on several occasions, making it a wonderful example of a country house that was used extensively in the production of wines and oil on the surrounding estate. The large 16th-Century cellars remain, along with an old oil press and other containers.
