The little town of Guardistallo, which derives its name from medieval Latin Stallum Gualdi, is situated on a hill in the hinterland of the Etruscan Coast, where the river Sterza flows into the Cecina. Of Longobard origins, as its name witnesses, the village fell under domination by the Della Gherardesca family, who gave it to the bishop of Volterra. Its surrounding area is, for the most part, covered with woods and a few pastures, and its principle activity is wine and oil.
Guardistallo is a medieval village that has remained almost completely intact, immersed in the countryside and with a beautiful view over the Tirreno and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. There are shops and very good restaurants in the town and small concerts and various events are held in the square during the summer.
Guardistallo is much loved by tourists for its natural attractions and for its vicinity to Volterra (30 km), San Gimignano (50 km), Siena (80 km), Pisa (60 km), Lucca (70 km), Florence (120 km), Populonia and the Elba Island (60 km).
