The Castle, still a dominating presence in Vinci, was originally built in the Early Middle Ages, when Vinci was subjected try Florence and transformed into a Commune. After various vicissitudes and modifications of the structure, the Castle once more became the property (if the Commune in 1919).
Since 1953 it has housed the Museo Leonardiano. Inside are frescoed and sculptured coats of arms, mementos of the Podestà, and the splendid terra-cotta, Madonna and ChiId by Giovanni della Robbia.
The Vinci itinerary is completed by the Biblioteca Leonardiana, a documentation center specialized in the works of Leonardo. Officially opened to the public in 1928, the library has been a point of reference for Italian and foreign scholars ever since.
It contains facsimile reproductions of all of Leonardo's manuscripts and drawings, as well as all the printed editions of his works, beginning with the first edition of the Trattato della Pittura of 1651.
