The town of Gavinana, an attractive fraction of San Marcello Pistoiese, is a well known locality for summer and winter holidays. Surrounded by beautiful chestnut woods, it still maintains today the structure of the old Mediaeval village. In fact, it is characterised by the little winding streets which climb upwards to the town’s main piazza and also by its old, rustic houses. In the centre of the town, there is a building of the 1500’s which is of particular architectural value and which today houses the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese. The history of the town is tied to the leader of troops Francesco Ferrucci who, in 1530 led his soldiers against the Imperial army. The equestrian statue in the main piazza of the town and the nearby Museo Ferrucciano are dedicated to this heroic fighter. In the piazza you can also find the ancient parochial church of Santa Maria Assunta (XII century) which houses prized fifteenth century works in terracotta by B. Buglioni and a precious organ of the 1800’s built by Cesare and Luigi Tronci.
