Set in the more gentle side of Siena area, Buonconvento is now an important rural centre; thanks to its particular and strategic position, where the rivers Arbia and Ombrone join together, along the Via Francigena. It has a very ancient past. It is still enclosed inside the 14.th century city walls, it still preserves the monumental north gate and the rectangular plan of that period and now houses an interesting museum of religious art. Amongst the other sights worh seeing are an uncommon number of fine Liberty-style noble houses. Lastly, there are many castles scatered over the sourrounding land, such as the fortres of Bibbiano Guiglieschi, over thousand years old, the tower of Bibbiano and the great architectural complex of Castelnuovo Tancredi.
The local economy is mainly based on agriculture and breeding of swines. There are also numerous shoe making, textile and for the artisan manufacturing of pottery’s day industries. The white truffles coming from Buonconvento is very famous. Do not miss to taste the various typical products, such as white wine Vinsanto and the delicious white truffles from The Clay Hills.
