Is the Province of Siena the loveliest in Italy as some proclaim? This could lead to endless discussion but no-one could deny that it is the most varied, multiform, and wondrously changeable in the whole peninsula.
So varied, infact, as to be in constant inner conflict, such as when setting the almost mountainous splendour of the Colline Metallifere (Ore hills) with the ancient fortified boroughs of Chiusdino, Monticiano, Radicondoli and Casole, and the Montagnola (Monteriggioni, Sovicille) against the bare yet dignified magnificence of the Crete (Clay Hills) of Asciano, Monteroni, Buonconvento and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within a handful of kilometres.
A land whose justly famous DOCG (controlled and garanteed origin) vineyards are situated almost like towers erected in its defence along the borders: Montalcino, the Chianti League (Radda, Gaiole and Castellina), with Castelnuovo Berardenga on one side and San Gimignano and Poggibonsi on the other to link it all together, suspended between rocks, woods and clay fields.
The olive groves and other lands so generous with fruits (suffice it to mention the truffles, honey and Chiana Valley meat) alternate with munificent, salubrious waters such as those of Bagno Vignoni in San Quirico d'Orcia and of
Rapolano, impressive, centuries-old handcrafts (crystal in Colle di Val d'Elsa) and other traditions, untouched nature and remote settlements such as mysterious Murlo.
In short,
an ever-changing land full of surprises, that leaves you no time to think, yet allows no distractions. Rather like its people, masters in Tuscan Italian, witty speakers and ready to give a warm, sincere welcome.
At Siena and environs, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
