Gallicano rises on a hill dominating the Serchio river. The place name probably comes from its founder "Gallicanus". The foundation and the successive development of the city was on the Middle Ages and at this time the village was quarreled by the cities of Lucca, Florence and Modena that wanted to conquer Gallicano. The local economy is based on the cattle breeding and on agricultural production of cereals and valuable wines.
Among the most interesting monuments to see in Gallicano there is the Pieve of Saint Jacopo and the Medieval village. Among the events and manifestations in Gallicano the traditional Saint Jacopo Horse Race held yearly on 25th July, in honour of the Saint Patron. Recently a remarkable tourist activity developed alco thenks to the environmental started at the beginning of the last century.
