Once upon a time, back in 1142, Nova Levante was called "Nove". The work of tree felling and the construction of "Masi" or shepherd's mountain homes was largely terminated at the end of the 14th century. These "Masi" and the surrounding countryside belonging to the Ladin population are very striking. This is clear evidence that the land used to be inhabited by the Ladin population. Near to the name "Nove" there is also "Nofalatina", Welschnofen and Walischnofe. The base word "(terra - land) Nova" means "Neubruch", i.e. the new land of the Ladins. The woods were cut down and the area turned into farming land by the "Walschen", which was the new name for the Romans.
Therefore the name "Nova Levante" (Welschnofen) means, new colony founded by the Romans. Today the "Costalunga Pass" marks the language border between German and Roman culture. In 1870, Nova Levante became an independent municipal area, which rapidly developed in economic terms after the road was opened through the Ega Valley. The forestry and artisan economies flourished and with the progress of the new century, tourism. Nevertheless, despite the rapid economic development, the inhabitants have conserved their kindness and natural freshness, and the elder inhabitants are full of interesting events and anecdotes.
