On a sunny south-western slope overlooking Meran at 600 m above sea level, Schenna covers an area of 48 km2. The centre of the village is only 5 km from the famous health resort Meran. In this south-western position our holiday resort is the sunniest spot in the valley basin of Meran. There are vineyards up to 500 m where the sun ripens the famous grapes of Meran. Above the vineyards there are orchards and chestnuts grow up to an altitude of 1000 m followed by shady pine forests up to 2000 m and alpine pastures above the treeline. Schenna is a quite modern tourism place, but it is also characterised by history.
Two names are closely linked with this history: Petermann and Archduke Johann. Petermann, who managed the office of the territory on behalf of the Tyrolean sovereign prince, erected himself a monument as architect of the Castle of Schenna. When the sovereign princess Margarethe Maultasch confirms him in his office of judge in 1363, he becomes one of the mightiest lords in the country. The second name is Archduke Johann of Austria. In the middle of the 19th century he acquires the Castle of Schenna. The widely visible mausoleum is his last resting-place.
