Castles and churches in Val Gardena
Mother Nature has created the most spectacular monuments
in Val Gardena, but there is more to the region than the fine scenery
nevertheless, including works of man which are very much worth
discovering. Those works of man are the most impressive that
have been set in the beautiful countryside of Val Gardena, like
the Crucifix of Seurasas or St. Jacob's Chapel.
The Ortisei Parish Church is a product of the late Baroque
period, with two side aisles added at the beginning of the 20th
century. Inside the church are numerous paintings and statues,
including a huge statue of St. Ulrich by Ludwig Moroder and an
Adoration of the Magi by Josef Moroder-Lusenberg as an altar-
piece. The finely carved wooden pews should not be missed,
either.
St. Anne's Chapel was built at the cemetery in Ortisei at
about the beginning of the 15th century and enlarged around 1515.
The simple little building has a beautiful portal and a number of
interesting old gravestones and memorial tablets.
Another unassuming building is St. Anthony's Chapel on
the main square of Ortisei (built in 1673). It has a pretty ridge
turret, which makes it a popular motif for photographers, and an
altarpiece depicting the chapel's patron saint, St. Anthony of
Padua, painted by the Swiss artist Melchior Paul von
Deschwanden in the Nazarene style of the 19th century.
St. Jacob's Church (la "dlieja da Sacun") above Ortisei
is thought to be the oldest ecclesiastical building in the valley. It
is dedicated to St. Jacob, the patron saint of walkers and pilgrims.
The church occupies a picturesque location, and there is a fine
collection of frescoes in the choir plus sculptures on the Baroque
high altar (originals in the
Val Gardena Local Heritage
Museum). Ask at the Tourist
Offices about the opening
hours of the church.
At Val Gardena, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
