San Martino di Castrozza is a recently founded town: of the old medieval monastery where pilgrims and travellers found food and lodgings, only the Romanesque church bell tower is left today. San Martino di Castrozza is quite charming, with its low houses made of wood and stone in typical mountain style, surrounded by large gardens. Born as a tourist resort in the 19th century, is still has all the liveliness and glamour of an elegant and busy "alpine capital".
San Martino di Castrozza lies in a wide expanse of meadows, fully exposed to the sun and surrounded by thick conifer woods, with 45 km ski slopes, cross-country tracks and walking paths unwinding through the woods. Grat scenery for this prestigious resort is provided by the Pale di San Martino, one of the best known Dolomites groups.
The San Martino di Castrozza - Passo Rolle ski area enjoys a unique position in the Dolomites: the southern tip of the Dolomiti Superski carousel, it can claim temperatures that are never too severe and countless sunshine days. Here are ski runs for over more than 60 km, at between 1,404 and 2,357 m altitude, within a unique natural landscape. The runs cover all difficulty levels, are wide and well groomed, with 24 up to date ski lift facilities. The San Martino di Castrozza Ski School, one of the first to open in Italy, has almost seventy years experience and offer a team of instructors who use the most modern techniques to teach all disciplines: from downhill skiing to carving, snowboarding, competitive skiing.
Skiing at San Martino di Castrozza and Passo Rolle will certainly ensure new emotions: all slopes are situated within the Nature Park, an unspoilt protected area for the last 30 years. From the runs, we can discover majestic forests, wild animals, Dolomites rocks and small Alpine lakes, but also the malghe where in summer are produced the famous cheeses of the valley.
