The Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park consists of a typically mountain environment, but within the almost 20,000 hectares there is a great variety of landscapes: imposing walls of white dolomite; smooth vertical cliffs of dark porphyry; extraordinary geological forms modelled by the events of tens of millions of years; inaccessible valleys; canyons carved by teeming torrents, arid rocky plateaux and small glaciers; smooth rounded fields and alpine pastures; silent clear pools, witness to ancient and imposing glaciers; suggestive centuries-old forests amplifying the voice of nature, where woodland fauna is often seen; and again, many forms modelled by man; signs on the land of history fascinating though recent, paths to be followed, places to stop at, museums to visit. The Park was founded in 1967 and in more than thirty years of activity and continuous growth, has seen and continues to see ever more appreciation on the part of the many visitors.
