Castel Thun was built in the middle of the 13th century and was the seat of the powerful Thun family which, in the Non and Sole valleys, also possessed other prestigious residences such as Castel Bragher and the Caldes and Castelfondo castles. This castle is situated on the top of a hill close to the town Vigo di Ton and is located in a splendid panoramic position. It is one of the most interesting examples of castle architecture in the Trentino region; its civil-military structure is typically Gothic and it is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications made up of towers, crescent-shaped ramparts, moat and patrol walkway; the "porta spagnola" - ‘Spanish gate’- (1566) is particularly striking. On the ground floor, there are the public halls while the first floor holds the lords’ chambers. Amongst the many, still richly furnished rooms, the most valued is the "stanza del vescovo" (‘the bishop’s chamber’) which is completely finished in cirmolo wood (‘Pinus Cembrall’), with a panelled ceiling and a monumental main door, inhabited by the prince-bishop Sigismondo Alfonso Thun. The castle’s chapel, dedicated to Saint Giorgio, preserves an interesting cycle of frescoes of the German school which dates back to the second half of the 15th century.
At Valle di Non, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
