In Valnerina, near Terni, the valley sides converge at one point to create a
formidable natural barrier. Here medieval lords founded two castles that still
glower at one another from opposite sides of the Nera river: the Castello di
Precetto and the Castello di Mattarella.
The two small towns that grew up around the two fortified centres have now
combined to form Ferentillo. The delightful parish church of San Stefano in
Precetto contains some mummies. These are the bodies of some of the townspeople
originally buried in the lower church. Over the centuries they have been
perfectly preserved as a result of the ideal conditions created by the local
climate and topography.
