The river, near Alviano, features a large humid area of great naturalistic interest (Oasi di Alviano), in whose marshy environment it is possible to see, thanks to special observatories, numerous species of birds and other aquatic animals moving freely in their natural habitat. The typical architecture of the towns in the area is that of the mediaeval village, in many cases having developed around a pre-existing fortified castle, as is the case for example in Giove and Alviano; Amelia, thought by many experts to be the oldest town in Umbria, has megalithic walls assembled without using any grout, dating back to the 8th-7th century B.C. The agricultural environment, which fortunately has remained unspoilt, offers produce of excellent quality: oil, wine, chestnuts, game and meat in general are the staple ingredients of all the most delicious dishes of the local tradition. The Amerino is also a land rich in customs, traditions and folklore.
At the Amerino region, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
