Massa Martana is the most important town and also the administrative town of a vast agricultural territory full of human settlements gathered around ancient castles and villas of particular beauty. During the last years the town has recorded a considerable development both in craftmanship and industrial sectors. The town stands on the top of a cliff at the foot of Mounts Martani, almost in the centre of Umbria, between Perugia and Terni, the two administrative seats of Umbria. For its healthy climate and for the fact of being close to the biggest and most famous historical and artistic towns of the region, which are easily accessible thanks to a good road network, Massa Martana has a privileged position as a summer resort. The Mounts Martani, whose highest summits are even higher than one thousand metres, are the town frame and one of its most important attractions.
Easily accessible, the Mounts Martani, offer to nature-loving people the opportunity of making interesting and healthy excursions through the vast and uncontaminated evergreen woods of holm oaks and pine-trees of Aleppo. Moreover, on the top of their hills stand ancient and picturesque castles, which still preserve most of their original medieval architecture. The village started to be habitated around 220 b.C, when the Flaminia way was constructed. The presence of ancient romans is confirmed by the Fonnaia Bridge, dated III century b.C. Close to the village it is possible to visit the marvelous christian catacombs realized around the III-V century a.D. Within the entire commun and village one can find plenty of churches along the Flaminia way, among which shoud be reminded Santa Maria di Pantano, San Faustino, Santa Illuminata, Santi Fidenzio e Terenzio, Santa Maria della Pace and finally San Pietro super aquas.
