Lake Trasimeno is the largest expanse of water on the Italian peninsula, the fourth for extension in the whole of our nation, with a surface area of 128 sq. km. Fluvial in origin and also partly tectonic, it is roughly circular in shape and the water is approximately 6 m deep; the shorelines are low, crescent shaped and, for stretches, edged with canes. Three islands rise up from Lake Trasimeno: the Maggiore and the Minore close to the northern shore, while the Polvese lies close to the south-eastern corner.Its banks are dotted with resort towns: Castiglione del Lago, Citta della Pieve, Magione, Paciano, Panicale, Passignano, Piegaro and Tuoro.
