The valley of Ayas is the second you encounter entering the Aosta Valley from Piedmont. Furrowed by the Evançon stream, it is also called "Valley of Challant". Like the other Monte Rosa valleys it has glacial origins; it is Ushaped, 35 km long and no more than 10 km wide. This is a winding valley with numerous charming basins, stretching out in the narrow Arcésaz and Antagnod valleys. The valley is closed to the West by the spur starting at the col of Cime Bianche, by the Gran Tournalin (3379 m) and by Mount Zerbion (2720 m). This compact wall can be crossed only on its northern side, towards Valtournenche. It offers easy cols to the Lys valley: the most direct is the Bettaforca col (2646 m). Covered with meadows, fields and woods, it is open towards the pass of Joux (known for the historic fountain of Napoleon), and crossed by an interesting road from Brusson to Saint-Vincent.
