The commune of Arvier is laying on the bottom of the Dora Baltea river, around the medieval borough which rises at 780 metres of altitude, at 14 kms from Aosta.
In summer, this place is ideal for those who like a holiday in the quiet and want ta go for a healthy trip in wide woods. You can climb through grazing grounds up to the border of the Doravidi glacier and Becca di Tos, walking along panoramic paths.
The historical monument heritage is made up by the remains of the castle, dating back to the end of the thirteenth century, the parish church of San Sulpizio with its Romanesque bell-tower, the Rochefort chapel, facing the bottom of the valley from the height of its rock. Paricularly interesting is the village of Leverogne where the traces of the Middle-Ages harmoniously blend with more recent structures.
The winter season is a good opportunity to discover the dark shapes of towers and castles which stand out in the dazzling whiteness of the background. Planaval, in the Valgrisenche, offers many possibilities to winter sports lovers; its nice cross-country ski run, winding at the foot of a severe tower built in the XIVth century, is also a starting point for wonderful ski touring routes on the massif of Ruitor and for inebriating downhill races, supported by an helicopter. To all those who practise snow sports and who enjoy meeting the historical and cultural aspects of the land, hotels and restaurants offer a refined gastronomy with the traditional mountain kitchen dishes and DOC wines from the vineyards of Arvier.
