Adjacent to the Cogne and Rhêmes Valleys, from which it is separated by a chain
of towering mountains, the Valsavarenche, less than 30 km from Aosta, is one of
the best known and loved localities of international fame; and this is not only
because its magical territory is the only of the 13 Municipalities of the Gran
Paradiso National Park to be included for its entirety in the protected area. It
is also because it can offer quality facilities which are able to guarantee the
best conditions for the numerous lovers and participants of snow and mountain
sports or for who, more simply, wishes to experience the marvellous spectacle of
the natural surroundings. The first records of this Valley date back to the
Middle Ages and teach us of its standing, it belonged first to the "feud of
Châtel Argent di Villeneuve", an enchanting little town with which it had always
shared its history, and then to the House of Savoy. In fact, Umberto of Savoy,
at his own expense, had the Church of the Carmine, dating back to 1888,
rebuilt.
The "Valley of the waters", as some love to call Valsavarenche, due to its many
streams and brooks, is a true paradise for those who love to be in direct
contact with nature, from alpinism to nordic skiing, from downhill skiing to
climbing on ice, from Alpine-skiing to canoeing and rafting. There are also
plenty of routes for mountain bike enthusiasts, while excursionists are spoilt
for choice for itineraries which are classed according to their difficulty. An
Alpine guide is necessary, though, for the climbs up the majestic mountains.
