But Ravenna is not just the custodian of an impressive and ancient heritage. Also well worth a visit are the dante museum, housing many artefacts and works of art inspired by Dante's immortal poetry, and the Museum of Contemporary Furnishing, the first of its kind in Europe. Even mechanical musical instruments are on display in what is the largest permanent collection in Italy.
The Town Art Gallery, housed in the Renaissance period Loggetta Lombardesca (early 16th C.), contains the famous statue of Guidarello Guidarelli, sculpted by Tullio Lombardo in 1525 and traditionally the goal of a romantic pilgrimage. Canvases by sixteenth century masters and contemporary works of art, including a collection of mosaics and one-man shows and theme exhibitions, are further compelling reasons to visit the Art Gallery. The Classense Library, one of the oldest and most distinguished in Europe, possesses more than 600,000 books and thousands of ancient manuscripts. Important exhibitions, such as those featuring alchemy manuscripts and Byronic artefacts, have made the Classence Library one of the most vibrant centres of cultural activity in Italy.
After mosaics, Ravenna's second great love is music.
In July of every year Ravenna stages an important music festival that fills the streets and the piazzas, as well as the town's theatres. The Rocca Brancaleone, an ancient Venetian fortress (15th. C.), is the main venue for the festival and its bastions provide an impressive backdrop for opera sets. Maestro Riccardo Muti, who lives in Ravenna when he is not conducting orchestras in major theatres all over the world, is the first of the Festival's performers we should mention. But Luciano Pavarotti, Fiamma Izzo d'Amico, Renato Bruson and Ruggero Raimondi, as well as Riccardo Chailly and Wolfgang Sawallisch, are all names that have headed the list of traditional guests at "Ravenna Festival".
In August the Rocca Brancaleone changes style, but music is again the attraction: Ravenna Jazz is an enormously popular event that for the last twenty years has been wooing an enthusiatic public. And here too the list of performers is lengthy and impressive: Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Charlie Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and Sonny Rollins.
Despite its ancient beginnings and wealth of historical buildings, Ravenna is a thoroughly modern, thriving town with a packed programme of culture and entertainment, making it the ideal destination for a holiday full of charm and fascination.
