The Trail meanders through the provincial district, concentrating, however, specifically in the areas of production of the Mantuan wines: Northern Mantua (Alto Mantovano) with the morainic hills of Lake Garda and southern area of Mantua (lasso Mantovano) to the right and to the left of the River Po. Northern Mantua is remembered as a land of famous battles during the Italian Risorgimento, the most bloody being that of Solferino and San Martino and then there were the differences between the Venetians and the Lombards.
The belt of morainis hills borders with the Brescia and Verona provinces, a stone's throw away from Lake Garda, and it is crossed by the River Mincio which flows out of the biggest Italian lake at Peschiera. Slight slopes and little valleys give the landscape a smooth hilly aspect, but every so often cypress trees, castles and forts loom out of these antique border villages. The geographical conformation, the mild climate, cooled by the breeze of the lake, and the consistency of the clayey soil all contribute towards an ideal position for the wines. The long enological tradition of the area has the added advantage that it is near the more renounced areas of Brescia and Verona. A mutal exchange of knowledge, technique and of wines has raised the quality if the wines, especially after the renewal which followed the terrible phylloxera disease (grape-louse) in the 80s. Today, more than 1,000 hectares of specialised wines cover the hilly areas around Ponti sul Mincio, Monzambano, Volta Mantovana, Cavriana, Solferino and Castiglione delle Stiviere. The wine Garda Colli Mantovani received its D 0 C recognition 1976 and 1997, the wine Garda D.O.C got recogniton in 1996 Along the shores of the River Po, the experience and tradition of Matuan Lambrusco goes back to the times of the Benedictines.
