From Cuneo depart six wonderful valleys: PESIO VALLEY, site of "Alta Val Pesio Park", characterized by various and luxuriant vegetation, culminates with the massif of the Marguareis (m. 265 I), and it is an ideai piace for rock-climbing and walks. Along the valley the ancient Certosa (Carthusian monastery) is situated, founded by the followers of St. Brunone in the 1173. VERMENAGNA VALLEY leads up to Colle di Tenda, one of the historic connection for France and Liguria. Famous for over 100 kilometres of tracks of the principal skiing station, Limone Piemonte offers, besides the splendid walks in Natural Special Reserve of Palanfr, the possibility to admire the murales dedicated to Pinocchio painted on houses of Vernante. GESSO VALLEY leads to the foot of the highest peaks of maritime Alps, with the massif of the Argentera, and up to the Regional Park, full of paths and alpine shelters; well-known are the Valdieri thermal baths, at 1400 m., already known in roman times and dear to the Savoy family, with a total of thirty-two hyper-thermal springs that emit sulphorous medium-mineral content waters, therapeutic for dermatological and rheumatisms treatments. STURA VALLEY, the longest of the Cuneo valleys, has its starting point from Borgo San Dalmazzo, that hosts the Fiera Fredda (Cold Fair) in December dedicated to the snail since 1569, and climbs until Colle della Maddalena (Maddalena Pass), another historical connection towards France and from which descended many enemies. The valley offers splendid cross-country skiing tracks and routes for alpine skiing and mountainbike; Vinadio is extremely famous for its fortifications, wanted by king Carlo Alberto, after a period of Napoleonic domination, then the Vinadio Baths, with its Thermal Centre of sulphorous waters, and the Sanctuary of St. Anna, that, situated at 2010 m., is the highest in Europe. GRANA VALLEY is well-known for gastronomy, expecially for the DOC Castelmagno cheese that gives its name to the ancient Sanctuary situated at 1761 m. Soul of the valley is the Centre Prouvencal Coumboscuro, that it keeps in tradition the life, cultures and parties of the ancient civilization "occitana", having survived through centuries in italian valleys to the frontier with the french Provence. MAIRA VALLEY, closed and winding, is the one that today is best known for keeping its ancient savour, thanks to the presence of numerous artistic testimonies such as rural chapels and alpine villages, that departs from Dronero, the chief town of the lower valley, and arrives to remote villages such as Elva. At Villar St. Costanzo you can admire an ancient abbey and the Natural Reserve of "Ciciu", characteristic columns of clavy earth with stone hat, like enormous mushrooms. Wonderful excursions are possible from here, up to the Mount Chambeyron (3389 m), the highest peak in the valley.
