Lake Garda is with no doubt the most characteristic of the italian Pre-Alpine lakes. Situated in the heart of the Pre-Alpine area, it is embedded in the lowlands of the Padana-Veneto in the south and the foothills of the Alps of Lombardy, the Trentino and the Veneto. Geologically speaking the lakes is the result of a series of natural events related to the formation of the Pre-Alps, a
great chain of crags with a usually sedimentary outer surface, typical of the Alpine region.
In successive phases the bed of the Lake Garda was formed and shaped by glaciers, in the south it took on the shape of a morainic amphitheatre and the rock faces dominate the northern part where Lake Garda resembles a Fjord. Successive climatic cycles, which proved to be increasingly temperate, caused the glaciers to melt filling the basin. The vast range of flora, which includes species indigenous to different climatic zones, are yet another example for the extraordinary character of this lake.
The enormous amount of water (about 50 million cubic metres) and the natural protection offered by the surrounding mountains and hills of Lake Garda provide the area with the ideal climate for all types of sport. The regular breezes from the north to the south during the early hours of the day and late afternoon transform the Lake Garda into a unique training ground and international meeting point for sailing enthusiasts. Clubs have sprung up for enthusiasts at competition level and the number of schools for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing is growing rapidly. The climate of the lake is such that it allows you to practise sports in the open air from the beginning of spring - especially tennis, as every tourist centre offers excellent facilities, the same can be said for athletics (Caprino, Bussolengo, Castelnuovo), golf (Costermano and Sommacampagna) and minigolf (Malcesine and Bardolino).
The immediate hinterland with its morainic hills and the chain of Mount Baldo is ideal for horse-riding, cycling, walking and mountain-biking. The various lifts of Malcesine-Monte Baldo and Prada-Costabella, are operating also in the summer season, but the country roads of Garda-Caprino-Ferrara di Monte Baldo and Novezza facilitate the transport up a height of 1.600/1.800 m; very popular are: the pleasant and impressive descents by mountain-bike, the spectacular flights from a height of over 1.700 m, paragliding and hang-gliding. The various lifts are also in operation during the winter season, there are slopes of various degrees of difficulty at Tratto Spino, Prada-Costabella and Novezza.
At Lake Garda, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
