The Quarters (Sestieri)
San Marco
San Polo
Santa Croce

Cannaregio - This is a working class quarter which was once the only link with the mainland; the oldest area confines with that of Rialto.
Castello - The largest quarter, working class and full of life; situated in the eastern part of the city, it includes the Arsenale dockyard. It confines with San Marco to the west, and with the lagoon to the east.
Dorsoduro - The name derives from the mounds which probably exist from right back to the beginnings of Venice and on top of which habitations were then built. It is one of the more peaceful and exclusive areas of the city.
San Marco - The oldest quarter, together with Castello, which was inhabited mostly by nobility. Today it is considered the political and religious centre, while the Rialto area is the commercial heart of the city.
San Polo; Santa Croce - Enclosed by the northern loop of the Grand Canal. Santa Croce includes the piazzale Roma and Tronchetto island.

Buildings are numbered according to the Sestiere to which they belong.
San Marco 2517 - Cannaregio 3499. To find an address, therefore, it is useful to have the name of the Calle or Campo, or at least a reference point.
  • Rio Ter: covered, filled in canal. Similar to rio terr is piscina, that often is a small square.
  • Fondamenta: part along the canal, narrower than a riva, whose name comes from the canal itself.
  • Riva: wide fondamenta, often overlooking the lagoon.
  • Ruga: Street with shops.
